{"id":6597,"date":"2016-02-25T05:32:51","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T05:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6597"},"modified":"2016-02-25T05:32:51","modified_gmt":"2016-02-25T05:32:51","slug":"the-kaya-identity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/02\/25\/the-kaya-identity\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kaya Identity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the issues that Michael <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/02\/19\/the-contribution-of-economics-to-the-gloomy-debate-about-climate-change\/\">Finus<\/a> discussed last\u00a0Tuesday night in his I-SEE seminar was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainabilitydictionary.com\/the-kaya-identity\/\">Kaya Identity<\/a>, which\u00a0is an equation relating to\u00a0human impact on climate. \u00a0I had not come across it before \u2013 such a sheltered life!<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that total emission levels can be set out\u00a0as the product of four inputs: population,\u00a0GDP\u00a0per capita,\u00a0energy intensity\u00a0(per unit of GDP), and\u00a0carbon intensity\u00a0(emissions per unit of energy). \u00a0It's a\u00a0version of the I = PAT\u00a0equation (which I had heard of).<\/p>\n<p>It can be written: \u00a0\u00a0<strong>F<\/strong> = <strong>P\u00a0<\/strong> x \u00a0<strong>G<\/strong>\/<strong>P<\/strong>\u00a0 x \u00a0<strong>E<\/strong>\/<strong>G\u00a0<\/strong> x \u00a0<strong>F<\/strong>\/<strong>E<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>F<\/strong>\u00a0is CO2 emissions<\/li>\n<li><strong>P<\/strong>\u00a0is population<\/li>\n<li><strong>G<\/strong>\u00a0is GDP, and<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong>\u00a0is energy consumption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and where<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>G\/P<\/strong> is\u00a0a measure of affluence<\/li>\n<li><strong>E\/G<\/strong> is energy intensity,\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li><strong>F\/E<\/strong> is carbon intensity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It can apply to nations and globally, and I wrote about carbon intensity last <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/10\/26\/falling-carbon-intensity-the-uk-leads\/\">October<\/a>. \u00a0This was one of the less gloomy parts of the talk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the issues that Michael Finus discussed last\u00a0Tuesday night in his I-SEE seminar was the Kaya Identity, which\u00a0is an equation relating to\u00a0human impact on climate. \u00a0I had not come across it before \u2013 such a sheltered life!
