{"id":6598,"date":"2016-02-18T07:54:16","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T07:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6598"},"modified":"2016-02-18T07:54:16","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T07:54:16","slug":"aude-forgets-about-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/02\/18\/aude-forgets-about-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"AUDE forgets about learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aude.ac.uk\/home\/\">AUDE<\/a>, the\u00a0Association for University Directors of Estates, has launched a\u00a0HE Sector Sustainability Evaluating Methodology \u00a0\u2013 known colloquially as the <em>Green Scorecard<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>AUDE says that the intention of the scorecard is to \"<em>improve and promote sustainability, reflecting and demonstrating progress and improvement<\/em>\". \u00a0The aim is that it will be ...<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\uf0b7 Relevant to and focussing on sustainability in terms of the remit of estates and facilities<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Independent and apolitical<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Credible within and outside the sector<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Based on robust data that is simple to collate<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Useful as a tool for Estates Functions to prioritise efforts and benchmark against others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The scorecard set out eight sustainability categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\uf0b7 Energy &amp; Emissions<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Transport<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Water<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Waste<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Adaptation<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Procurement<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Biodiversity &amp; Landscape, and<\/li>\n<li>\uf0b7 Overall<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I've read the report setting all this out and could find no mention of learning. \u00a0There is one mention of education as a procurement indicator: \"<em>Sustainable construction - education and environment<\/em>\" \u2013 although it's hard to see what this means. \u00a0This deliberate omission is justified in this statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"It is the intention is for this methodology to only cover aspects controlled by the Estates function, with the intention that EAUC are to produce a complementary methodology. \u00a0The scope of the methodoloy was explored in the consultation workshops. During the workshops, aspects such as the social impacts (including the living wage) and student engagement, although considered important, were rejected from being including in the scorecard as <\/em>[they]<em> were out of the scope of issues that could be influenced by Estates and would be more suited to the wider university policy issues.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u00a0we have AUDE's thinking set out clearly: those who work in Estates cannot have any influence on what happens in the rest of the university, especially on its core functions of teaching and research.<\/p>\n<p>How, after the very many years of working on sustainability in higher education, has it come to this?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AUDE, the\u00a0Association for University Directors of Estates, has launched a\u00a0HE Sector Sustainability Evaluating Methodology \u00a0\u2013 known colloquially as the Green Scorecard.
