In a\u00a0resolution entitled \u201cUnited Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014)\u201d, the United Nation's general assembly [GA] has reaffirmed UNESCO\u2019s role as lead agency for the implementation of the\u00a0Global Action Programme on ESD, the follow-up of the ESD Decade. \u00a0Phew!<\/p>\n
UNESCO says that,<\/p>\n
\"within the framework of the\u00a02030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the resolution highlights the importance of education for achieving sustainable development in its three dimensions: <\/em>empower learners to take informed decisions and responsible actions for environmental integrity, <\/em>economic viability and <\/em>a just society.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The UN GA\u00a0also noted the key findings, challenges, and recommendations outlined in the review by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova of the implementation of the Decade of ESD, and UNESCO says that the resolution strengthens UNESCO\u2019s voice and legitimacy to continue promoting ESD worldwide and provide technical assistance to states.\u00a0\u00a0The next report on the GAP\u00a0will be submitted by the UN Secretary-General to the General Assembly at its 72nd session in 2017.<\/p>\n
All governments were\u00a0encouraged to \"scale up ESD\" through implementation of the GAP and to increase efforts to \"institutionalize ESD\".<\/p>\n
As if the world did not have troubles enough. \u00a0My instinct is that North Korea, Syria and Eritrea will not be the only countries to ignore all this.<\/p>\n
