{"id":6613,"date":"2016-03-10T07:59:20","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T07:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6613"},"modified":"2016-03-10T07:59:20","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T07:59:20","slug":"my-day-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/03\/10\/my-day-in-court\/","title":{"rendered":"My day in court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, that should really be: <em>An afternoon at\u00a0the University of Bath\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/statutory-bodies-committees\/court\/\">Court<\/a><\/em>, but ...<\/p>\n<p>I went to the Court meeting, which was informative and lively. \u00a0I also went to a lecture beforehand with the title:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Empowering Higher Education for a Sustainable Future<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Big mistake. \u00a0I'm used to listening to talks on 'sustainability' that end up being about\u00a0endurability, usually\u00a0with a financially focus, but it was novel to go to one that didn't mention sustainability at all. \u00a0This\u00a0was a first.<\/p>\n<p>It was organised by the University's\u00a0<em>International Centre for Higher Education Management, <\/em>and turned out to be an hour-long advert for what it does. The March winds howled throughout the session, I think, in protest at the format whereby a bunch of academics got 8 minutes each to say very little in as unco-ordinated a way as possible. \u00a0Given the nature of the audience, this was disappointing to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it wasn't all a waste of time. There was a student\u00a0from South Africa, Mukovhe Masutha, who I could have listened to for much more than his allotted time, and I can now\u00a0share some pearls of wisdom with you about management education. \u00a0Here they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hard work is\u00a0necessary<\/li>\n<li>Failure to listen is a bit of a problem<\/li>\n<li>Balance scientific knowledge with practical wisdom<\/li>\n<li>Reflection and action need to go together<\/li>\n<li>Have an ethic of care and an ethic of criticism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There! \u00a0Now you know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, that should really be: An afternoon at\u00a0the University of Bath\u00a0Court, but ...
