{"id":6643,"date":"2016-04-26T05:59:46","date_gmt":"2016-04-26T05:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6643"},"modified":"2016-04-26T05:59:46","modified_gmt":"2016-04-26T05:59:46","slug":"unesco-uk-celebrates-its-wider-value","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/04\/26\/unesco-uk-celebrates-its-wider-value\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO UK celebrates its wider value"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went to UNESCO's reception the other evening to mark the publication of a report into the \"wider value of UNESCO to the UK\". \u00a0You can download it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org.uk\/publication\/wider-value-of-unesco-to-the-uk-2014-2015\/\">here<\/a>. \u00a0The evening was well-organised, relaxed and informative.<\/p>\n<p>The report says that there are three core benefits of UNESCO membership:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Financial value<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0UNESCO helped UK affiliated institutions and bodies to attract at least\u00a0\u00a3100 million\u00a0in additional income in one year.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Wider, non-financial value<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0UNESCO designation is a recognised mark of world-class quality, and a mechanism to enhance quality. \u00a0By leveraging the UNESCO brand and collaborating with the global network, the UK\u2019s UNESCO projects can access new programme, partnership and funding opportunities and influence key decision makers.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Support for UK government policy<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0UNESCO activity in the UK complements a broad portfolio of UK-government and devolved administration policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UNESCO says that the research suggests that there is\u00a0significant untapped potential for UNESCO in the UK as, at the moment, UNESCO designation in the UK is used in different ways, to varying levels of success. Some UNESCO-affiliated organisations see their designation as a simple \u2018badge\u2019 that\u00a0recognises\u00a0quality. Others see it as a mechanism to\u00a0enhance\u00a0quality by working collaboratively with the dynamic, global UNESCO network to develop new programme, partnership and funding opportunities. \u00a0The UK National Commission plans to draw upon this research to develop a programme of targeted support for current and prospective UNESCO projects in the UK to help them achieve the full potential of their involvement with UNESCO.<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of 'designation boards' round the room which showcased what UNESCO is good at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biosphere Reserves<\/li>\n<li>Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission<\/li>\n<li>Chairs &amp; UNITWIN Network<\/li>\n<li>International Hydrological Programme<\/li>\n<li>Creative Cities<\/li>\n<li>Memory of the World<\/li>\n<li>Global Geoparks<\/li>\n<li>World Heritage<\/li>\n<li>L\u2019Or\u00e9al for Women in Science<\/li>\n<li>Associated Schools Programme<\/li>\n<li>Expert Network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The evening was mostly for \"networking\", with only three\u00a0brief inputs. \u00a0One was a talk by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouth.ac.uk\/staff\/iain-stewart\">Iain Stewart<\/a>, the geologist, who spoke engagingly about the heritage beneath\u00a0our feet. \u00a0He had some great graphics, and had something to say that was germane to issues of\u00a0Brexodus.<\/p>\n<p>Curiously, there was no mention of the sustainable development goals as far as I could see, and, thankfully, nobody was promoting ESD \u2013 although there are some case studies of UK 'best practice' in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went to UNESCO's reception the other evening to mark the publication of a report into the \"wider value of UNESCO to the UK\". \u00a0You can download it here. \u00a0The evening was well-organised, relaxed and informative.
