{"id":6664,"date":"2016-05-18T07:45:12","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T07:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6664"},"modified":"2016-05-18T07:45:12","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T07:45:12","slug":"pale-male-and-stale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/05\/18\/pale-male-and-stale\/","title":{"rendered":"Pale, Male and Stale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another stimulating day at the NUS sustainable development observatory board yesterday \u2013 although we\u2019re now an advisory group, I note. \u00a0Too many Boards, it seems.<\/p>\n<p>We had a glimpse of the latest survey results about what students think about the need for a focus on sustainability in their university work. \u00a0Much the same as they have done for the past 5 years, as you ask. \u00a0A remarkable consistency of view, given that the cohort changes every year. \u00a0These outcomes cannot be influenced by the universities themselves, given the timing, so might it be what schools do, despite DfE indifference? \u00a0Or is it <em>because<\/em> of DfE indifference? \u00a0Maybe it's something in the water \u2013 or the air. \u00a0All that NOx, maybe. \u00a0It is quite perplexing, given how little schools do (or say they do).<\/p>\n<p>We learned that, in future, NUS is going to be lobbing for \"<em>a liberated and sustainable curriculum<\/em>\u201d in universities (and colleges, presumably). \u00a0I wondered (aloud) what this was liberation from. \u00a0From those who are \u201cpale, male and stale\u201d, someone suggested. \u00a0Like me?, I thought, and wondered whether the <em>NUS <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nus.org.uk\/en\/take-action\/liberation-campaigns\/\">liberation team<\/a><\/em>\u00a0has its eye on everyone\u00a0like me. \u00a0Maybe my time on the advisory group is near its overdue\u00a0end.<\/p>\n<p>Then we talked about\u00a0the <em>Well Being of Future Generations in Wales Act<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/thewaleswewant.co.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/Guide%20to%20the%20WFGAct.pdf\">WFGAct<\/a>)\u00a0with its 7 goals and 5 ways of working \u2013 which I had inexplicably missed. \u00a0We were enjoined, by Welsh members of the group, to see this in the same light as the sustainable development goals, though the Welsh Goals seems to be quite different.<\/p>\n<p>According to the published Guide, they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a globally responsible Wales<\/li>\n<li>a prosperous Wales<\/li>\n<li>a resilient Wales<\/li>\n<li>a healthier Wales<\/li>\n<li>a more equal Wales<\/li>\n<li>a Wales of cohesive communities<\/li>\n<li>a Wales of vibrant culture and thriving Welsh language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are, of course, to be viewed as a whole, not as separate goals. \u00a0I did find myself\u00a0wondering why, the 4th goal wasn\u2019t a \u201chealthy Wales\u201d. Is that really beyond reach? \u00a0More on all this, no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>NUS is supporting the Remain campaign in the referendum, and so is encouraging students to register to vote . I contributed\u00a0by signing up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thunderclap.it\/projects\/41884-eu-referendum-23-june-2016\"><em>Thunderclap<\/em><\/a> around voter registration. \u00a0Whatever you think about Brexodus, encouraging voting always seems a good idea. \u00a0It was almost worth going to the meeting to discover what <em>Thunderclaps<\/em> are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another stimulating day at the NUS sustainable development observatory board yesterday \u2013 although we\u2019re now an advisory group, I note. \u00a0Too many Boards, it seems.
