{"id":6735,"date":"2016-08-03T06:41:37","date_gmt":"2016-08-03T06:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6735"},"modified":"2016-08-03T08:51:04","modified_gmt":"2016-08-03T08:51:04","slug":"fen-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/08\/03\/fen-1\/","title":{"rendered":"FEN 1 \u2013 Future Trends in ESE research: where to from here?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A good evening\u00a0in the Fens, I thought,\u00a0as\u00a0ECER's first PhD conference began\u00a0last night in Cambridge with a thoughtful and probing introduction by Marcia McKenzie who was on splendid\u00a0form despite having to cross both Canada and the Atlantic to get here. \u00a0I was worn out just crossing England, but I put this down to a break in the journey at Bicester Village to see how the other half shops. \u00a0I contented myself with an espresso amidst the swirl of conspicuous consumption around me. \u00a0A visit to the Village is recommended for all those who think that buying stuff you don't really need in large amounts is somehow falling out of fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Marcia's talk was titled: <em>Future Trends in ESE research: where to from here?<\/em>\u00a0 My first thought was to wonder where <em>here<\/em>\u00a0actually was, and whether we'd all agree about that. \u00a0My second was that the focus and \u00a0construction of the talk, and the gentle participation\u00a0required of us, was rather well-judged, given the nature of the audience. \u00a0It was, to ECER's credit a splendidly international audience.<\/p>\n<p>We were asked to think (in threes) about Ganz's ideas around <em>Challenge, Choice, Outcome<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Moral<\/em>, which proved a good means of helping people who'd just met to talk about how they saw their work, and what they wanted from it.<\/p>\n<p>I suggested that perhaps an\u00a0academic\u2019s main challenge is that hardly anyone will ever know about what they\u00a0do, given how hard it seems for research to percolate through into the mainstream media. \u00a0It follows that identifying your key audience early on is important for a researcher. \u00a0Marcia was kind enough to quote the question I posed at the Durban WEEC conference in 2007:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Given all the difficulties the world now faces in relation to development and the environment \u2013 and the importance of education in addressing such challenges \u2013 what insights does environmental education research provide that will help us?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It still seems a good question ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A good evening\u00a0in the Fens, I thought,\u00a0as\u00a0ECER's first PhD conference began\u00a0last night in Cambridge with a thoughtful and probing introduction by Marcia McKenzie who was on splendid\u00a0form despite having to cross both Canada and the Atlantic to get here. \u00a0I...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6735","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6735","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6735"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6735\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6735"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6735"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6735"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
