{"id":6755,"date":"2016-09-09T05:36:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T05:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6755"},"modified":"2016-09-09T05:36:01","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T05:36:01","slug":"revolution-through-soft-furnishings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/09\/09\/revolution-through-soft-furnishings\/","title":{"rendered":"Revolution through soft furnishings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote the other day about an <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=6751&amp;action=edit\">encounter<\/a> in Walthamstow with the ghost of William Morris, noting that all the fine wall paper and lovely design in the world couldn't raise the consciousness of the oppressed masses. \u00a0That's the trouble with furnishings: they tend to mask false consciousness rather than reveal it.<\/p>\n<p>It was good, therefore, on a rare visit to Tate Mod to find soft furnishings that embodied a strong social message. \u00a0These were curtains (or wall hangings, if you prefer) by Columbian artist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/explore\/inside_out\/2011\/06\/30\/beatriz-gonzalez-a-contemporary-court-painter\/\">Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez<\/a>, who created them in 1981 from images in the popular press as a protest against the antics of the President. \u00a0The art work was hugely popular and was sold by the metre. \u00a0As the TM blurb noted: \"<em>The work became both a marketable commodity and a metaphor for corruption hiding behind the 'curtain' of public image<\/em>.\" \u00a0 Just so. \u00a0You can see it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artworks\/gonzalez-interior-decoration-l03743\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A pity, maybe, that Morris hadn't the wit to do the same, although it might have dented the profits of Morris &amp; Co a little bit. \u00a0It was only one of two pieces I remotely appreciated\u00a0in T.
