{"id":6767,"date":"2016-09-14T05:51:44","date_gmt":"2016-09-14T05:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6767"},"modified":"2016-09-14T05:51:44","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T05:51:44","slug":"gender-hubbub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/09\/14\/gender-hubbub\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender Hubbub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've been reading about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderhub.org\">Gender Hub<\/a>, but for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n<p>GH (not to be confused with Good Housekeeping)\u00a0says that it's<\/p>\n<p>\"a free online resource that aims to strengthen the cadre of gender expertise and its application in Nigeria. \u00a0It has the following aims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promote a \u2018culture of evidence\u2019 will build local capacity to generate and apply evidence on issues relating to gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment.<\/li>\n<li>Improve the quality of communication, campaigns, decision-making, and action to trigger change in social norms.<\/li>\n<li>Enrich the work of networks and coalitions, and build communities of practice and strengthen their understanding of issues relating to the enabling environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderhub.org\/about\/\">website<\/a> adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"While is does not specifically aim to inform the world about gender issues in a Nigerian context, the platform will nonetheless provide a window for outsiders to gain more of a contextualised understanding of the gender dimensions of development in this context.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As you see, grammar (and\u00a0probably proof-reading) is not one of its core skills, but that's not the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The person running GH is\u00a0Natalie Jeffers, who is also a co-founder and organiser of Black Lives Matter UK. \u00a0According to the Sunday Times,\u00a0Jeffers claims there is a \u201cwar going on against black people\u201d in Britain and that black women such as herself face \u201cextreme levels of oppression\u201d from the state.<\/p>\n<p>This sounds a bit rich (in every sense) coming from someone who\u00a0gets at least \u00a350,000 a year from the ever-generous UK tax-payer (c\/o DfID) to run, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattersoftheearth.com\">Matters of the Earth<\/a>,\u00a0and jet around\u00a0the world. \u00a0 As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/taxpayers-foot-bill-for-protest-leader-x9g6hzhk8?shareToken=d029e51047d830e28b3191bf28611e35\">Times<\/a> noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"But even as nine Black Lives Matter UK activists \u2014 all white \u2014 shut down London City airport last week in protest against \u201cracist\u201d climate change and air travel, Jeffers was packing her suitcase for what was at least her seventh intercontinental flight of the past year.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/kjv\/matthew\/23.htm\">Whited sepulchres<\/a> all, as St Matthew noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. \u00a0Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just so. \u00a0For the record, I think all lives matter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I've been reading about Gender Hub, but for all the wrong reasons.
