{"id":6771,"date":"2016-09-20T05:27:28","date_gmt":"2016-09-20T05:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6771"},"modified":"2016-09-20T05:27:28","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T05:27:28","slug":"subjective-well-being-over-the-life-course-evidence-and-policy-implications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/09\/20\/subjective-well-being-over-the-life-course-evidence-and-policy-implications\/","title":{"rendered":"Subjective well-being over the life course:\u00a0evidence and policy implications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This the prolix title of an\u00a0international <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/statistics\/OECD-LSE-Conference-12-13-December-2016.pdf\">conference<\/a> in London on 12\/13 December at the LSE. \u00a0 It's asking:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Why should governments care about people\u2019s wellbeing, and <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How would policy change if raising wellbeing was the objective<\/em>?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The conference blurb says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Understanding how people experience and feel about their lives provides valuable information for policy-makers. \u00a0But for public policy to\u00a0improve\u00a0people\u2019s subjective well-being, we need a good understanding of what drives it. \u00a0This two-day conference will examine the latest evidence from UK and international research on the determinants of subjective well-being over the life course, and what this might mean for policy-making.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u00a0conference will report the first results from a collaboration between the LSE's\u00a0Centre for Economic Performance, the CEPREMAP Wellbeing Observatory at the Paris School of Economics, and the OECD, and an international consortium of researchers. \u00a0There will be ...<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keynote addresses from Lord Gus O\u2019Donnell, Jeffrey Sachs, Mari Kiviniemi, John Helliwell, and Alan Krueger<\/li>\n<li>High-level panel discussions on well-being and policy<\/li>\n<li>The launch of a new Wellbeing Society<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think I know the answer to the first question as this was a key issue at a seminar I went to at the Treasury some years ago. \u00a0This was also graced by the presence of Gus O'Donnell who made a nice joke about a \u00a350 note and wore the most magnificent white shirt I have ever seen. \u00a0He probably said interesting things but I\u00a0was too dazzled by the shirt to notice.<\/p>\n<p>And the answer?<\/p>\n<p>Simples really, the Treasury thinks that more wellbeing would mean a higher GDP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This the prolix title of an\u00a0international conference in London on 12\/13 December at the LSE. \u00a0 It's asking: Why should governments care about people\u2019s wellbeing, and How would policy change if raising wellbeing was the objective?
