{"id":6782,"date":"2016-09-22T06:01:14","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T06:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6782"},"modified":"2016-09-25T16:41:56","modified_gmt":"2016-09-25T16:41:56","slug":"didactics-and-the-national-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/09\/22\/didactics-and-the-national-trust\/","title":{"rendered":"Didactics and the National Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've been leafing through the NT's Autumn magazine and turned to the article by Simon Murray, the <em>Senior Director of Everything<\/em> with particular interest. \u00a0Actually Murray is only i\/c Strategy, Curatorship, Visitor Experience, and External Affairs, but you do wonder what else there is for others to do. \u00a0Anyway, he's obviously a busy bloke, so we should be grateful that he's found the time to commit his thoughts to paper. \u00a0And what thoughts they are. \u00a0There's a big block of bold text in the middle of the article which runs:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>The vision is for a programme that inspires you to take something from your visit that will make a difference.\"<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This, it turns out, is not an encouragement of\u00a0petty theft or grand larceny,\u00a0both of which are routinely possible at NT houses. \u00a0Rather, it's all about learning outcomes which it seems are central to its new 10-year strategy (Playing our part). \u00a0Murray says: \"<em>We want to create experiences for our visitors that move, teach and inspire them<\/em>.\" \u00a0I've a terrible thought that compulsory learning objectives cannot be far behind \u2013 and we'll\u00a0probably encounter them in a tent strategically placed between the car park and the first raffle ticket sellers.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose behind all this becomes clear as you read on. \u00a0It is to help the Trust address the \"<em>current crisis in the historic and the natural environment<\/em>\" through the\u00a0<em>Playing our part<\/em> strategy so that visitors who've been taught, moved and inspired, will then go away and\u00a0<em>do<\/em> something to make a difference to make the world a bit of a better place.<\/p>\n<p>Having poked some fun at the earnestness of all this, I should say that I like the idea\u00a0of helping people get more out of visits, and that more of us, and more frequently, should do something positive in the world, as far as we can. \u00a0I fear it will have to be handled gently, however, as quite a lot of visitors obviously go to NT properties for a nice day out and a cream tea. \u00a0But the Trust knows that.<\/p>\n<p>I'll say more about what Murray writes about the countryside in another post, as this he says \u00a0\"<em>is more difficult<\/em>.\" \u00a0Indeed it is!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I've been leafing through the NT's Autumn magazine and turned to the article by Simon Murray, the Senior Director of Everything with particular interest. \u00a0Actually Murray is only i\/c Strategy, Curatorship, Visitor Experience, and External Affairs, but you do wonder...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6782","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6782","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6782"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6782\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6782"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6782"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6782"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
