{"id":6783,"date":"2016-09-26T05:46:32","date_gmt":"2016-09-26T05:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6783"},"modified":"2016-09-26T05:46:32","modified_gmt":"2016-09-26T05:46:32","slug":"countryside-didactics-and-the-national-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/09\/26\/countryside-didactics-and-the-national-trust\/","title":{"rendered":"Countryside Didactics and the National Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/09\/22\/didactics-and-the-national-trust\/\">wrote<\/a> last week about the article by Simon Murray, the NT's <em>Director of Everything<\/em>, in the Autumn magazine, and promised to\u00a0say some more about what he had to say about the \"more difficult\" countryside.<\/p>\n<p>Well, he wrote\u00a0this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"The countryside is more difficult. \u00a0People get that immediate 'wow' from walking in places like the Lake District \u2013 there are green fields and sheep grazing or corn being cut \u2013 and they don't see the devastation of nature that these pastoral images can conceal.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow! indeed. \u00a0Someone should tell Murray that if visitors to the Lakeland fells ever encounter un-devastated nature (all <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/03\/12\/when-quality-meets-the-common-woman\/\">bracken and rank grass<\/a>), they won't thank him. \u00a0I imagine that it was this sort of egregious re-wilding nonsense that was behind the Trust's top dollar payment in Borrowdale to ensure that farming would stop on a large chunk of the valley. \u00a0To be fair, biodiversically speaking, it will prove to have been\u00a0a great day for thistles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote last week about the article by Simon Murray, the NT's Director of Everything, in the Autumn magazine, and promised to\u00a0say some more about what he had to say about the \"more difficult\" countryside.
