At the recent NUS Services Convention, its\u00a0member students\u2019 unions unanimously approved a resolution for NUS to become 100% Fairtrade for the cotton products it sells. \u00a0This year, about 18% of the ~\u00a34m of cotton clothing NUS\u00a0sold to and through students\u2019 unions was Fairtrade. \u00a0The new target is that this\u00a0will be 100% by the time NUS turns 100 years old in 2022.<\/p>\n
NUS says that forced labour of students is a real issue in Uzbekistan, as is child labour in Pakistan, and it knows that much of the cotton in its\u00a0non-Fairtrade products originates from Pakistan, with,\u00a0possibly, some from Uzbekistan. \u00a0It says that Fairtrade is the only guaranteed way to track cotton back to the exact the field in which it was grown, and that this\u00a0also gives it\u00a0certainty that people have not been exploited in the growing and harvesting of it.<\/p>\n
