{"id":6943,"date":"2017-04-12T06:52:51","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T06:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6943"},"modified":"2017-04-12T06:52:51","modified_gmt":"2017-04-12T06:52:51","slug":"geography-for-geographers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2017\/04\/12\/geography-for-geographers\/","title":{"rendered":"Geography for geographers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, the Commission on Geographical Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.igu-cge.org\/Charters-pdf\/2016\/IGU_2016_def.pdf\">CGE<\/a>)\u00a0published an <em>International \u00a0Charter on\u00a0Geographical Education<\/em>. \u00a0This imposing tome fails the real-world test at the first hurdle. \u00a0Despite this being a 2016 publication, there is only one reference to the SDGs. \u00a0This is in a section saying that the Charter is \"supportive of the principles\" set out in:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0the Charter of the United Nations<\/li>\n<li>the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/li>\n<li>the Constitution of UNESCO<\/li>\n<li>the UNESCO Recommendation concerning Education for\u00a0International Understanding, Cooperation and Peace<\/li>\n<li>the Declaration on the Rights of the Child<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0the UN Sustainable Development Goals; and<\/li>\n<li>many national curricula and statements on geographical\u00a0education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are affirmations and proclamations galore, and an action plan, but just one mention of the SDGs. \u00a0To me, this illustrates the un-worldliness of the thing: written by international geographers for international geographers. \u00a0How are we supposed to take this seriously when it\u2019s clearly about geography, rather than the state of the world? \u00a0Try looking up \u201cpoverty\u201d or \u201cjustice\u201d and see what you get.
