{"id":6980,"date":"2017-06-05T06:22:18","date_gmt":"2017-06-05T06:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6980"},"modified":"2017-06-05T06:22:18","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T06:22:18","slug":"the-paris-discord-and-lignite-angst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2017\/06\/05\/the-paris-discord-and-lignite-angst\/","title":{"rendered":"The Paris Discord and Lignite Angst"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was never much enthused by the Paris Agreement; too much hype and hope as opposed to proper targets and legal enforcement. \u00a0It was, of course, the best deal\u00a0on offer at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the US government has walked away, this should not mean the end of the US involvement. \u00a0This is a chance for American business \u2014 I'm calling it <em>InstantSpottyFaceMcGoogleColaTube<\/em> \u2014 to step forward and sign up\u00a0for good of the planet (and their future revenues). \u00a0After all, as Bernie Sanders might have argued, why should the poor American taxpayer stump up when <em>InstantSpottyFaceMcGoogleColaTube<\/em> already has their money?<\/p>\n<p>The only people to really enjoy the US\u00a0withdrawal were the EU's 32 presidents. \u00a0Did you see them? \u00a0They could hardly contain their glee at the chance for another bit of grandstanding and sanctimonious\u00a0Trump-bashing. \u00a0One of the benefits of a hard Brexit (maybe the only one) will be end of having to listen to smug\u00a0Germans lecturing us about the evils of carbon while they burn mega-tonnes of dirty\u00a0brown coal (lignite). \u00a0This, in 2015, contributed\u00a0more than solar and wind combined to\u00a0the country's\u00a0electricity supply. \u00a0See\u00a0<em>energy-charts.de<\/em> for the current position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was never much enthused by the Paris Agreement; too much hype and hope as opposed to proper targets and legal enforcement. \u00a0It was, of course, the best deal\u00a0on offer at the time.
