It's TEF<\/a> time in universities and colleges. \u00a0This is when there are either whoops 'n' hollas of joy (relief more like) or the traditional wailings 'n' gnashings when an institution had been utterly misjudged and hence had its reputation traduced.<\/p>\n

Southampton is one such, and its\u00a0VC was given the run of the THE to express outrage 'n' disgust at the outcome (a bronze medal). \u00a0He described the TEF as \u201cfundamentally flawed\u201d with\u00a0\u201cno value or credibility\u201d, adding \u201cThere is no logic in our result at all [and]\u00a0the benchmarking is fundamentally flawed\u201d. \u00a0He added that the \u201cconcept of gold, silver and bronze was absolutely meaningless\u201d for students seeking educational excellence, while the TEF\u2019s name was misleading as its metrics were not a robust measures of teaching quality. \u00a0Others who did badly complained as well, as did\u00a0the National Union of Students which\u00a0called the TEF<\/p>\n

\u201canother meaningless university ranking system\u2026[which] fail[s] to capture anything about teaching quality\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Well, whilst, all this outrage invites something of a Mandy Rice Davies response, there is clearly\u00a0a contrived quality to the TEF, and nobody (as far as I'm aware) was ever observed actually teaching. \u00a0Understandably, there are appeals in process. \u00a0Happily, I am TEF-free, being neither required to contribute to it, nor to take much notice of it \u2013 actually, any notice of it al all, which renders this post rather gratuitous and voyeuristic. \u00a0I'll just add, for what little it's worth, that I rather agree\u00a0with the NUS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
