{"id":7095,"date":"2017-11-12T20:41:39","date_gmt":"2017-11-12T20:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7095"},"modified":"2017-11-12T20:41:39","modified_gmt":"2017-11-12T20:41:39","slug":"theres-little-learning-in-the-wel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2017\/11\/12\/theres-little-learning-in-the-wel\/","title":{"rendered":"There's little learning in the WEL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wales Environment Link (<a href=\"http:\/\/waleslink.org\">WEL<\/a>) is a network of environmental, countryside and heritage non-governmental organisations across Wales. \u00a0Its\u00a0vision is a healthy, sustainably managed environment and countryside with safeguarded heritage in which the people of Wales and future generations can prosper.<\/p>\n<p>As NAEE <a href=\"http:\/\/naee.org.uk\/ok-monday-round-november-13-17\/\">noted<\/a> today, it will not take you long to find out what it has to say about education. \u00a0This is what (my emphasis) the Introduction has to say:<\/p>\n<p>There has never been a greater urgency to act on the biggest environmental issues that Wales faces:\u00a0the ongoing challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing strain on the essential\u00a0environmental services that underpin our economy and society. \u00a0To address these challenges, Wales must\u00a0develop in a sustainable way. \u00a0For Wales Environment Link this means a Wales that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is low carbon<\/li>\n<li>has a circular, green economy<\/li>\n<li>is rich in wildlife<\/li>\n<li>provides exceptional access to nature and green spaces<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>provides every child the opportunity to learn in the natural environment<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li>values the culture, heritage and identity of its communities, landscapes and seascapes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the second Objective is:<\/p>\n<p>To contribute to the achievement of a Wales in which people are healthy and able to fulfil their\u00a0potential no matter what their background or circumstances, we are calling for the next Welsh\u00a0Government to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide support for more woods and trees where people live, so that every city, town and village in Wales\u00a0benefits from native trees and fruit trees in their area.<\/li>\n<li>Improve people\u2019s access to the countryside and connection with nature by safeguarding rural tranquillity\u00a0and ensuring everyone has access to natural green space and wildlife within a short walk of where\u00a0they live.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Make outdoor learning and care for the natural environment a required part of the school curriculum<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That's it. \u00a0There's no mention of ESD or global learning \/ citizenship (GC) or of ESDGC which used to be in the vanguard of such matters. \u00a0Has ESDGC been lost in the drive to raise PISA scores, I wonder? \u00a0It's certainly all very quiet across the Marches. \u00a0And\u00a0there's no mention of young people either, or of the SDGs. \u00a0All very weird.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wales Environment Link (WEL) is a network of environmental, countryside and heritage non-governmental organisations across Wales. \u00a0Its\u00a0vision is a healthy, sustainably managed environment and countryside with safeguarded heritage in which the people of Wales and future generations can prosper.
