{"id":7096,"date":"2017-11-14T06:21:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T06:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7096"},"modified":"2017-11-14T06:21:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-14T06:21:04","slug":"time-for-critical-thinking-about-critical-thinking-about-critical-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2017\/11\/14\/time-for-critical-thinking-about-critical-thinking-about-critical-thinking\/","title":{"rendered":"Time for critical thinking about critical thinking about critical thinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've been reading what the admirable Shakira Martin, President of NUS, has been saying about sustainability education. \u00a0You'll find it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sera.org.uk\/equip_students_act_climate_change?utm_campaign=newsletter_0311&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=uksera\">here<\/a>,\u00a0adapted from a speech she delivered at a Labour Party Conference fringe event. \u00a0There's much to agree with in what Shakira says, and some things to contest. \u00a0This passage struck me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"So, what does this education look like? \u00a0Fundamentally, it is not about simply teaching about sustainability but rather learning for sustainability. \u00a0It is not nearly enough for our learners to be able to recite facts about climate change \u2013 they need to have the skills and understanding to make a difference. This must be the aim of any \u201cgreen\u201d education system.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We need our young people to be empathetic and caring individuals who can put themselves in someone else\u2019s shoes.<\/li>\n<li>We need them to be cooperative team-workers, ready to work across disciplines, cultures, classes, and borders.<\/li>\n<li>We need them to be strong communicators with the confidence to share their ideas and the humility to learn from others\u2019 who may not share the same views.<\/li>\n<li>We need them to be critical thinkers and systems thinkers who can understand the complexity of the world they face and ask good questions.<\/li>\n<li>We need them to be resilient and compassionate. And, importantly, we need them to be lifelong learners and leaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are not skills that can really be taught but rather \u201ccaught\u201d through the educational experiences our students have, in both formal and informal education.<\/p>\n<p>... . \u00a0We need to recognise that this learning takes place not only in lecture halls and classrooms, but also across the campus, in students\u2019 communities, and through active involvement in clubs, societies, and volunteering.
