{"id":7153,"date":"2018-02-21T08:23:19","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T08:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7153"},"modified":"2018-02-21T08:23:19","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T08:23:19","slug":"the-names-bond-basildon-bond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/02\/21\/the-names-bond-basildon-bond\/","title":{"rendered":"The name's Bond, Basildon Bond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A long while back (somewhen in the 1980s I think), Jordanhill Teacher Training College* in Glasgow did an evaluation of some competency-related programme or other (the details of which escape me). \u00a0The providers of the programme identified what they claimed were 3 increasingly complex outcomes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can make a cup of tea<\/li>\n<li>Can write a letter<\/li>\n<li>Can deal with any eventuality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The evaluators noted drily that this went from\u00a0Brooke Bond\u00a0to\u00a0Basildon Bond to\u00a0James Bond** in 2 easy steps.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of this during an exchange with a colleague about a contemporary evaluation of ESD provision in a western EU country. \u00a0In this, the evaluators were required to\u00a0report using two categories, classifying work on ESD as either: [i] <em>well-developed<\/em>; or [ii] <em>in need of development<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This seemed to me to be a rather limited set of alternatives. \u00a0In particular, \u2018in need of development\u2019 has to be a very broad category ranging from \u2018have really not done very much (if anything)\u2019, through 'has made a good start', to \u2018is developing well, but still a lot of room for improvement\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>My colleague agreed but say that their team had been over-ruled by those paying for the evaluation who wanted it to \"be supportive\". \u00a0In other words, prizes for everyone irrespective of actual merit. \u00a0But evaluations are supposed to send accurate signals, not to make everyone happy, so there is something quite wrong here.<\/p>\n<p>.............................<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The College existed for some 80 years (1913-1993) before being absorbed with the University of Strathclyde. \u00a0It was well-known, internationally, for its interest in (and training teachers for) environmental education.<\/li>\n<li><em>Brooke Bond<\/em>\u00a0is a brand-name of tea owned by Unilever, <em>Basildon Bond<\/em> is a brand of personal note paper, and <em>James Bond<\/em> is still keeping the UK safe from bad guys of all kinds ...<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A long while back (somewhen in the 1980s I think), Jordanhill Teacher Training College* in Glasgow did an evaluation of some competency-related programme or other (the details of which escape me). \u00a0The providers of the programme identified what they claimed...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7153","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7153","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7153"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7153\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7153"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7153"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7153"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
