{"id":7178,"date":"2018-02-14T08:33:22","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T08:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7178"},"modified":"2018-02-14T08:33:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T08:33:31","slug":"being-mindful-of-the-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/02\/14\/being-mindful-of-the-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"Ever mindful of the GAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had an email the other day from UNESCO's representative on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>This included a couple of policy briefs that have been\u00a0developed through the Global Action Programme (GAP). \u00a0The email said that these were the key messages:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>As a means of implementation, education is an important tool to support the achievement of each SDG.<\/li>\n<li>Improvements in the quality of education and equitable access to it can have a wide diversity of development benefits that demonstrate a high return on investment.<\/li>\n<li>ESD provides a valuable framework and methodology for achieving the goal of \u201cquality education ... for all\u201d as stated in SDG 4.<\/li>\n<li>Educational policies play a primary role in the effective implementation of ESD and framing how it influences and benefits the curriculum, teacher training, development of learning materials, and the learning environment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What's remarkable about this is the unremarkableness of points 1 &amp; 2 which I might paraphrase as \"education is a necessary component of effective socio-economic development. \u00a0But has UNESCO just stumbled across this idea? \u00a0It's hardly an outcome of the GAP. \u00a0Time to wake-up!<\/p>\n<p>Point 3 is just UNESCO having an internal conversation between its special-pleading ESD-ers and the more mainstream (and numerous) <em>education for all<\/em> types. \u00a0This has been going on for years to no great effect.<\/p>\n<p>As for point 4, if you ever find out what it means, do drop me a line ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had an email the other day from UNESCO's representative on Earth.
