{"id":7193,"date":"2018-03-07T07:35:22","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T07:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7193"},"modified":"2018-03-07T07:37:04","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T07:37:04","slug":"green-fiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/03\/07\/green-fiction\/","title":{"rendered":"Green fiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Green Stories<\/em>\u00a0is a\u00a0writing competition about what\u00a0a sustainable society might be like. \u00a0Further details are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenstories.org.uk\/about-the-competition\/\">here<\/a>, and\u00a0I was immediately tempted to nominate John Huckle's\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/02\/05\/bedford-2045-part-1\/\"><em><strong>Bedford 2045<\/strong><\/em><\/a> which I mentioned the other day. \u00a0Surely there are no better examples around, I thought, but then I saw that they have to be unpublished. \u00a0Such a pity as it would have romped home.<\/p>\n<p>The organisers say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"Stories are powerful means of inspiring positive change. The Black Mirror series reflects anxieties about our future, and climate change discourse further creates fear and avoidance. What we really need are some positive visions that allow potentially transformative solutions to be showcased and played out.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty in promoting sustainable behaviours is that they are often seen negatively as \u2018doing without\u2019 and the typical fear-based discourse can turn people off. This matters as in turn, political parties tend not to see environmental issues as \u2018vote winners\u2019 which limits potential for green policy making.<\/p>\n<p>Just as some books\/films product place products, we aim to \u2018product place\u2019 sustainable attitudes behaviours products and policies. The story doesn\u2019t have to be specifically about climate change or catastrophic shortages, it can be any kind of genre \u2013 rom com, crime drama, legal drama, children\u2019s book, sci fi etc. as long as it showcases sustainable technologies, practices, products or ideas in the background. Or another acceptable approach could be to focus on characters.
