{"id":7244,"date":"2018-05-23T05:30:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T05:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7244"},"modified":"2018-05-23T05:30:58","modified_gmt":"2018-05-23T05:30:58","slug":"schubert-hot-dogs-gershwin-and-popcorn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/05\/23\/schubert-hot-dogs-gershwin-and-popcorn\/","title":{"rendered":"Schubert, hot-dogs, Gershwin and popcorn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The cultural highlights of last week were Roderick Williams and Iain Burnside performing Schubert's <em>Die sch\u00f6ne M\u00fcllerin<\/em> in the Assembly Rooms at The Bath Festival, and a film of the West End production of Gershwin's <em>An American in Paris<\/em>\u00a0at the Trowbridge Odeon.<\/p>\n<p>It is invidious to compare the two as both were in their different ways quite wonderful. \u00a0Zo\u00eb Rainey is no Roderick Williams but her rendition of a Gershwins' song would stand comparison with anyone, and Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope easily out-danced Kelly and Caron. \u00a0And then there was the stage design which was beyond breathtaking. \u00a0Williams and Burnside was a simpler affair \u2013 a rather grand piano, a simple stage, a few \u00a3zillion worth of chandelier, and an expressive, seemingly effortless voice. \u00a0We were in the presence of greatness.<\/p>\n<p>The audiences do stand comparison, however. \u00a0In Trowbridge, it was largely grey, predominantly female, and not dressed for a night out. \u00a0It seemed to cover the social spectrum with many, perhaps, turned onto Gershwin by <em>Strictly<\/em>. \u00a0Bath looked like AB with a bit of C1, and was fairly evenly matched by sex (I cannot speak of gender). \u00a0Whilst it was also pretty old (though silver rather than grey), it was mostly smartly dressed and slimmer 'n' trimmer than Trowbridge. \u00a0It also brought that seemingly effortless social ease that Bath audiences are famous for. \u00a0The costs of tickets for each event were roughly the same.<\/p>\n<p>If the Bath Festival would like a more socially diverse audience I have a suggestion. \u00a0Just match\u00a0the Odeon policy of allowing customers to gorge excessively on popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, ice-cream, coke 'n' coffee during performances. \u00a0This will not only help to tick all those diversity boxes, it will probably also boost income.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cultural highlights of last week were Roderick Williams and Iain Burnside performing Schubert's Die sch\u00f6ne M\u00fcllerin in the Assembly Rooms at The Bath Festival, and a film of the West End production of Gershwin's An American in Paris\u00a0at the...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7244","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7244","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7244"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7244\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7244"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7244"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7244"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
