The respected\u00a0Institute for Outdoor Learning<\/em> has drafted\u00a0a childhood progression in outdoor learning. \u00a0This is a \"mapping of\u00a0the range of outdoor learning interventions designed to enable children and young people to form a healthy, developmental and sustainable self-led relationship with the natural environment\".<\/p>\n

This is to be welcomed. \u00a0It addresses two challenges:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. to enable a progression of outdoor learning opportunities<\/li>\n
  2. to use a new progression of opportunities to enable a progression of outdoor learning outcomes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This post focuses on the first challenge.<\/p>\n

    There is an immediate tension between the header and the text that follows. \u00a0The header talks about \u2018progression in outdoor learning\u2019; the text, about mapping \u2018a range of learning interventions\u2019.\u00a0 That is, the first would seem to be about learning, viewed broadly, and the second about teaching and pedagogy, again viewed broadly.\u00a0 Outcomes and inputs, if you like. \u00a0Given that learners don\u2019t learn what teachers teach, the scope for a mismatch here is considerable.\u00a0 There is always, in such discussions, a risk of a fracture between the outdoors and the learning, especially as the outdoor is always much easier to talk about than learning.<\/p>\n

    Challenge 1<\/strong><\/em> is to\u00a0to enable a progression of outdoor learning opportunities. \u00a0This focuses on \u2018outdoor learning opportunities\u2019.\u00a0 It concerns \u2018bridging boundaries\u2019, \u2018signposting opportunities\u2019, and \u2018developing insight\u2019.\u00a0 These are important matters and it would be a mistake to downplay the potential for better outcomes and more effective organisation (etc).\u00a0 However, there are issues about how learning features in all this.<\/p>\n

    Learning gets a mention as a sector: \u201cBridging the boundaries between \u2026. health, learning, play, recreation or environmental sectors \u2026\u201d, but learning is not just a sector, it\u2019s a potential outcome of activity in all the other sectors.\u00a0 As everyone know, we learn through play, etc.\u00a0But learn what, exactly?<\/p>\n

    The text says:<\/p>\n

    \u201cDeveloping our insight on the ways to build confidence and motivation for spending time outdoors in these settings, especially among communities experiencing disadvantage.\u201d<\/p>\n

    However, it might usefully have said:<\/p>\n

    Developing our insight on the ways to build confidence and motivation for spending time learning outdoors in these settings, especially among communities experiencing disadvantage<\/em><\/p>\n

    \u2026 if only to help us remember that learning is important here.<\/p>\n
