{"id":7277,"date":"2018-07-05T06:19:51","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T06:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7277"},"modified":"2018-07-05T06:19:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T06:19:51","slug":"how-are-we-measuring-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/07\/05\/how-are-we-measuring-up\/","title":{"rendered":"How are we Measuring Up?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I missed the launch of <em>Measuring Up<\/em> \u2013 UKSSD's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukssd.co.uk\/measuringup\">report<\/a> into how well the UK is implementing the sustainable development goals. \u00a0There's more\u00a0detail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukssd.co.uk\/news\/sdgs-can-help-the-uk-become-a-country-for-everyone\">here,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0I hope that government will see the report as useful in helping in what it is doing about the Goals. \u00a0Importantly, however, none of this should just be up to government. \u00a0\u00a0 Did you know that there is a Cabinet Minister for Implementing the Goals \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oliver_Dowden\">Oliver Dowden<\/a>? \u00a0I didn't.<\/p>\n<p>I have an ambivalent take on the Goals. \u00a0I recognise their importance to the millions who (unlike me) have little, or who live oppressed lives, whilst thinking there are far too many targets to be able to take them seriously. \u00a0I take the Copenhagen Consensus line on this \u2013 as you'll know if you've read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/The-World-Well-Leave-Behind-Grasping-the-Sustainability-Challenge\/Scott-Vare\/p\/book\/9781783537730\"><em>The World We'll Leave Behind<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which is to say that the world's money should be used on the goals and targets that will have the largest return \u2013 that is, bring the greatest improvement in people's lives \u2013 although that will be seen as very neoliberal, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably there is a push back against the \"growth\" part of Goal 8 \u2013 <em>Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all <\/em>\u2013 which I understand, except that I don't know how to realise the rest of Goal 8 without the \"growth\". \u00a0Does anyone?<\/p>\n<p>Then there's Goal 4 \u2013 'quality education', UNESCO's favoured phrase. \u00a0Do you know what it means? \u00a0No matter, it can mean what you want it to. \u00a0More on this next week. \u00a0Meanwhile, well done UKSSD for doing this work (which I had a small role in) in such a timely fashion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I missed the launch of Measuring Up \u2013 UKSSD's report into how well the UK is implementing the sustainable development goals. \u00a0There's more\u00a0detail here,\u00a0and\u00a0I hope that government will see the report as useful in helping in what it is doing...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,3,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7277","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-new-publications","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7277","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7277"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7277\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7277"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7277"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7277"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
