{"id":7327,"date":"2018-10-17T06:49:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T06:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7327"},"modified":"2018-10-24T08:38:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T08:38:50","slug":"outdoor-maths-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/10\/17\/outdoor-maths-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Outdoor maths education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There's a\u00a0<em>Circle of Life Rediscovery<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/circleofliferediscovery.com\/blog\/\">blog post<\/a> about outdoor maths: \"6 ideas for using syringes in a mathematical way outside\" written by a respected outdoor educator. \u00a0It was featured as an NAEE <a href=\"http:\/\/naee.org.uk\/outdoor-maths\/\">blog<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>This begins:<\/p>\n<p><em>\"I\u2019ve always used syringes for water play, mark making, as air pumps in technology projects and for having fun in the snow. I\u2019ve always chosen the biggest syringes I could find \u2013 100ml ones. \u00a0But this set, a present from a friend, fuelled the mathematical fire within me. Have a close look at the sizes and see what you notice \u2013 this is just the sort of thing to ask older primary aged children.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<div>The question is, is this environmental education? \u00a0 It seems to me not (and there's no evidence that the writer claims it as such). \u00a0It\u2019s one thing (and many good reasons) to go outside to study maths \u2013 it\u2019s called maths education outdoors. \u00a0It\u2019s quite another to go outside to study maths in order to pursue an environmental issue or topic \u2013 that\u2019s environmental education.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I think this distinction is absolute which is why, for me, \u2018education in the environment\u2019 always has to have an environmental focus if is to count as EE \u2013 otherwise it\u2019s just education \/ learning outdoors. \u00a0It\u2019s why I am so disappointed at all the emphasis that\u2019s on \u2018outdoor learning\u2019 these days, when so little has an environmental focus.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There's a\u00a0Circle of Life Rediscovery\u00a0blog post about outdoor maths: \"6 ideas for using syringes in a mathematical way outside\" written by a respected outdoor educator. \u00a0It was featured as an NAEE blog last week.
