{"id":7372,"date":"2019-01-16T07:45:16","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T07:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7372"},"modified":"2019-01-16T07:45:16","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T07:45:16","slug":"bloody-january-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2019\/01\/16\/bloody-january-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Bloody January again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/naee.org.uk\/january-7-2019-news-round\/\">NAEE news round-up<\/a> for alerting me to George Ellis (1753\u20131815). \u00a0He was a specialist on medieval literature, but (in 1778) wrote\u00a0<em>The Twelve Months<\/em>\u00a0under the pseudonym Sir Gregory Gander. \u00a0Here they are broken into seasons:<\/p>\n<p><em>Snowy, Flowy, Blowy, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Showery, Flowery, Bowery, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hoppy, Croppy, Droppy, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Breezy, Sneezy, Freezy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still pretty apt some will think. \u00a0Meanwhile, here is Flanders and Swann's take on the whole miserable affair:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Song Of The Weather<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>January brings the snow, Makes your feet and fingers glow.<\/div>\n<div id=\"inlyr\">\n<p>February's ice and sleet, Freeze the toes right off your feet.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome, March, with wint'ry wind, Would thou weren't not so unkind.<\/p>\n<p>April brings the sweet spring showers, On and on for hours and hours.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers fear unkindly May, Frost by night and hail by day.<\/p>\n<p>June just rains and never stops, Thirty days and spoils the crops.<\/p>\n<p>In July the sun is hot, Is it shining? \u00a0No it's not!<\/p>\n<p>August, cold and dank and wet, Brings more rain than any yet.<\/p>\n<p>Bleak September's mist and mud, Is enough to chill the blood.<\/p>\n<p>Then October adds a gale, Wind and slush and rain and hail.<\/p>\n<p>Dark November brings the fog, Should not do it to a dog.<\/p>\n<p>Freezing wet December, then...
