{"id":7419,"date":"2019-03-27T10:06:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T10:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7419"},"modified":"2019-03-27T10:06:31","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T10:06:31","slug":"almost-halfway-to-bedford-2045","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2019\/03\/27\/almost-halfway-to-bedford-2045\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost halfway to Bedford 2045"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2019\/02\/14\/millennial-socialism\">The Economist<\/a> ran a long feature article on <em>millennial socialism<\/em>. \u00a0It was mainly about the USA but the Leninist sect now controlling the Labour Party over here were a focus as well. \u00a0The emphasis was on new (and nor so new) proposals to make the following more equal: income, wealth and power, and there was a nice quote from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/James-Harrington\">James Harrington<\/a>, a 17th century English political philosopher who seems to have had more influence in the fledgling United States than he did here. \u00a0He wrote: \u201cwhere there is inequality of estates, there must be inequality of power.\u201d \u00a0Just so.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is, though, even if you do manage to make estates (wealth) more equal, will the grateful recipients feel obliged to exercise their new power for the common weal, or will they just want to spend it on foreign holidays \u2013 assuming that (I think inevitable) exchange controls will allow them to.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way, who\u2019s going to want to spend a whole evening at the civic hall arguing the toss about whether community facilities should be denied to the undeserving rich or to old folk, when there's Trans Football \/ Corrienders \/ University Bake-off \/ Celebrity Chiropody \/ Infatuation Island \/ etc, on the TV? \u00a0The answer is the sort of folk who do now.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, enough of speculation about the brave new world we might be having to endure shortly, what I really wanted to say was that reading the millennial socialism article brought the legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/john.huckle.org.uk\">John Huckle<\/a> to mind and his magisterial satire, <em><strong>Bedford 2045<\/strong><\/em>, that was first published in Huckle J. and Martin A. 2001. <em>Environments in a Changing World<\/em> (London, Prentice Hall).<\/p>\n<p>There's an (all too brief) extract <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2018\/02\/05\/bedford-2045-part-1\/\">here<\/a>, but you really should try to read the whole thing to get a proper feel for what\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, The Economist ran a long feature article on millennial socialism. \u00a0It was mainly about the USA but the Leninist sect now controlling the Labour Party over here were a focus as well. \u00a0The emphasis was on new (and...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7419","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7419","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7419"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7419\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7419"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7419"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7419"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
