{"id":7466,"date":"2019-05-21T06:44:58","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T06:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7466"},"modified":"2019-05-21T06:44:58","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T06:44:58","slug":"cuckoo-in-the-nest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2019\/05\/21\/cuckoo-in-the-nest\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuckoo in the nest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard my first cuckoo last weekend \u2013 calling over the fields. \u00a0Always a welcome event, even though the birds have well-evolved habits that (in humans) would be condemned as anti-social and have ASBOs in place.<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised to read that the information that the RSPB provides about the cuckoo omits the fact that the growing chick (which, of course, is in another bird's nest) turfs out the host bird's own eggs so that it can receive all the attention from its surrogate parents. \u00a0But it\u2019s true \u2013 you check it out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/birds-and-wildlife\/wildlife-guides\/bird-a-z\/cuckoo\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Given that this is a key characteristic of the bird's behaviour, why is it not mentioned?<\/p>\n<div>The usually informative BTO doesn\u2019t mention it either either \u2013 at least on its main <a href=\"https:\/\/app.bto.org\/birdfacts\/results\/bob7240.htm\">page<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0You have to find an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bto.org\/understanding-birds\/birdfacts\/bird-families\/cuckoos\">article<\/a>\u00a0before discovering this fact.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This seems very odd and I'm still wondering why the info is hidden. \u00a0These organisations can't somehow disapprove of the cuckoo can they? \u00a0 Thoughts on a postcard to the usual address ...<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard my first cuckoo last weekend \u2013 calling over the fields. \u00a0Always a welcome event, even though the birds have well-evolved habits that (in humans) would be condemned as anti-social and have ASBOs in place.
