{"id":7489,"date":"2019-06-12T06:53:27","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T06:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7489"},"modified":"2019-06-12T06:54:55","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T06:54:55","slug":"sex-and-gender-are-all-the-same-to-edexcel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2019\/06\/12\/sex-and-gender-are-all-the-same-to-edexcel\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex and gender are all the same to Edexcel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More from the GCSE barricades.<\/p>\n<p>In this year's exams, <em><strong>Edexcel<\/strong><\/em> asked students to identify the gender shown by a diagram of a set of chromosomes, and then explain how gender is inherited from parents. \u00a0Except, of course, it isn't. \u00a0It's sex that's inherited as this\u00a0refers to biological differences while gender refers to socially-constructed roles. \u00a0A key feminist point is that the former should not dictate the latter. \u00a0The Times quoted\u00a0psychologist Cordelia Fine (and author of Delusions of Gender): \u201c<em>Using the terms interchangeably blurs importantly distinct concepts, and we need both \u2014 scientifically and socially<\/em>.\" \u00a0Indeed we do.<\/p>\n<p>And what did <em><strong>Edfarfromexcelling<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(owner Pearson) have to say? \u00a0\u201c<em>We have consulted our senior examiners and can confirm the word was changed to \u2018gender\u2019. . . to support students in understanding the question better<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What nonsense. \u00a0How pathetic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More from the GCSE barricades.
