{"id":7490,"date":"2019-06-13T07:31:19","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T07:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7490"},"modified":"2019-06-13T07:31:19","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T07:31:19","slug":"university-carbon-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2019\/06\/13\/university-carbon-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"University carbon cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I came across this summary of how one UK university has been responding to the need to use less carbon (and other stuff) in its operations. \u00a0I was quite impressed seeing how student numbers have grown:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u00a0Electricity use down 2% over last 2 years despite two major new buildings being built (4.5% or \u00a3160k worth of improvement if these are taken into account).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Energy consumption and water usage lower than 12 years ago despite significant growth over that period. When growth taken into account:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Electricity use per m2 floor area 26% lower<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Gas use per m2 floor area 28% lower<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Water use per m2 floor area 42% lower<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All this has saved \u00a31.5m annually<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Carbon emissions down 22% since 2005, a period of significant growth in the University\u2019s student population and physical infrastructure. Emissions per m2 building floor area are down 42% over the same period.
