{"id":7618,"date":"2020-01-29T08:01:04","date_gmt":"2020-01-29T08:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7618"},"modified":"2020-01-29T10:49:32","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T10:49:32","slug":"gretas-further-education-how-to-pay-for-the-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/01\/29\/gretas-further-education-how-to-pay-for-the-planet\/","title":{"rendered":"Greta's further education: how to pay for the planet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commenting on what Greta Thunberg had to say at Davos, the US Treasury Secretary dismissed her with the thought that she really ought to go to college to study some economics. \u00a0So here's a non-mainstream suggestion for her.<\/p>\n<p>Economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annpettifor.com\">Ann Pettifor<\/a> has been discussing the Green New\u00a0Deal on a <a href=\"https:\/\/novaramedia.com\/2019\/11\/15\/paying-for-the-planet-ann-pettifor-on-the-green-new-deal\/\">Novara Media<\/a> sound cloud. \u00a0I offer this contribution to Greta's further education not because I am persuaded by it (far from it), but because Pettifor is a contributor whose ideas deserve to be thought about and challenged. \u00a0For example, she seems to like the idea of government debt providing it's not too large and is spent on good things. \u00a0But how large is too large, and who's to judge? \u00a0And what's good ...<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Novara would be offer a better further education for us all were it not an echo chamber of mutual self-regard. \u00a0In this podcast Pettifor and her interlocutor seem to agree about everything and there is no challenge to her. \u00a0The same actually applies to this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.annpettifor.com\/2019\/10\/the-green-new-deal-chatham-house-interview\/\">Chatham House<\/a>\u00a0article which also provides some of her new green deal thinking, and covers some of the ground that Novara does. \u00a0See what you think. \u00a0I'm hopeful that the new (coming this summer) Times Radio will be the sort of channel to probe such issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commenting on what Greta Thunberg had to say at Davos, the US Treasury Secretary dismissed her with the thought that she really ought to go to college to study some economics. \u00a0So here's a non-mainstream suggestion for her.
