{"id":7625,"date":"2020-01-16T15:17:13","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T15:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7625"},"modified":"2020-01-16T15:17:13","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T15:17:13","slug":"sound-environmental-education-from-the-bbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/01\/16\/sound-environmental-education-from-the-bbc\/","title":{"rendered":"Sound environmental education from the BBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you been listening to the BBC's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m000cz18\/episodes\/guide\">Green Originals<\/a> series? \u00a0These 15 excellent brief (15 minute) programmes started in January and will end next week.<\/p>\n<p>I thought them well researched (as you\u2019d expect) and full of detail. \u00a0Who knew that William Golding suggested the name Gaia to James Lovelock for his theory? \u00a0Well, I did, actually. \u00a0But I didn't know that he did it as they talked in the Wiltshire village where they both lived.<\/p>\n<p>A very positive aspect is the global reach of the programme and the\u00a0<span class=\"\">mix of scientists, activists and communicators who are the foci<\/span>. \u00a0The choice of whom to feature is always revealing as bias is often just as much in the selection as in the content, and so who\u2019s (not) in is always a question to ponder. \u00a0I confess to not having heard of a couple of the people featured. \u00a0But I have now.<\/p>\n<p>The quite proper international focus has meant that the USA is only represented by Rachel Carson, James Hansen &amp; Joni Mitchell. \u00a0So, no Muir, Thoreau, Emerson, and no Whitman. \u00a0Germany has Petra Kelly but no von Humboldt, who influenced so many.<\/p>\n<p>I hope a lot of people listen to these, given that the BBC will keep them on line for a year, as it really is sound environmental education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you been listening to the BBC's Green Originals series? \u00a0These 15 excellent brief (15 minute) programmes started in January and will end next week.
