{"id":7629,"date":"2020-01-27T08:09:06","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T08:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7629"},"modified":"2020-01-27T08:09:06","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T08:09:06","slug":"the-greta-and-donald-show-part-67","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/01\/27\/the-greta-and-donald-show-part-67\/","title":{"rendered":"The Greta and Donald Show (part 67)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/trump-v-thunberg-is-the-battle-of-our-age-5sp302jjw\">David Aaronovich<\/a> has called\u00a0Trump v Thunberg \"the battle of our age\" and both were at the annual Davos shindig where climate change was the theme despite the prevalence of private jets. \u00a0I don't know about you but I thought that Donald Trump had the better of the verbal sparing at Davos, despite his bringing two jumbo jets with him. \u00a0I say this because he offered something positive. \u00a0Greta Thunberg, meanwhile,\u00a0made yet another interminable train journey (about 24 hours) to pass on her bleak message to the world. \u00a0You can see her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2020\/sessions\/forging-a-path-towards-a-common-future\">here<\/a>\u00a0along with other inspiring \u00a0young people who don't usually get the limelight. \u00a0Here are few of her cheery utterings:<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>We don\u2019t need a low-carbon economy . \u00a0We don\u2019t need to lower emissions. \u00a0Our emissions have to stop. \u00a0Any plan or policy of yours that doesn\u2019t include radical emission cuts at the source, starting today, is completely insufficient<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too much; too soon, her critics said. \u00a0 The trouble with Thunberg's\u00a0<em>please panic now<\/em> policy is that, if implemented in full, and by everyone, it would slam the economic brakes on resulting in a severe global recession that would do nothing to help the poor, or anyone else, although hedge funds would probably do ok given their ability to make money on the up and down sides of growth. \u00a0We should, of course, keep a bit of carbon in the ground for a rainy day). \u00a0Trump's wider point was that there is time to do something about climate change without having to adopt extreme positions \u2013 not of course, that he's doing much about it, although plenty of institutions in the USA are.<\/p>\n<p>My main interest in all this (from this blog's perspective) is the effect that Thunberg's gloom has on young people who seem gloomy enough already thank you very much judging by an article in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/young-people-seek-help-for-anxiety-over-climate-change-wsqhggv2n?shareToken=0b2197174db59b996382976408b7b5e2\">Times<\/a>. \u00a0It may seem too much to say that a 17 year old has responsibilities to temper her apocalyptic message with a bit of hope, but a lot of young people do listen to her. \u00a0To be continued ...<\/p>\n<p>PS, I did like the \"<em>Stop (f)lying to us<\/em>\" slogan though.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Aaronovich has called\u00a0Trump v Thunberg \"the battle of our age\" and both were at the annual Davos shindig where climate change was the theme despite the prevalence of private jets. \u00a0I don't know about you but I thought that...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7629","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7629","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7629"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7629\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7629"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7629"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7629"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
