{"id":7646,"date":"2020-02-19T07:57:06","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T07:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7646"},"modified":"2020-02-19T07:57:06","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T07:57:06","slug":"the-journal-of-referee-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/02\/19\/the-journal-of-referee-reports\/","title":{"rendered":"The Journal of Referee Reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I see that <em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0(a Springer journal) is opening up the mysteries of the peer-review process. \u00a0See this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/nature-shift-signals-new-era-peer-review-transparency?utm_source=THE+Website+Users&amp;utm_campaign=ac86a9331e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_02_17_03_19&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_daa7e51487-ac86a9331e-74197229\">report<\/a> in the THE. \u00a0About time, many say. \u00a0Hang on a bit, others respond.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ritu Dhand, vice-president at Nature Journals, told the\u00a0THE\u00a0that it was \u201cpretty edgy for us,\u201d adding that the \u201canxiety [about including peer review reports] came mainly from referees\u201d whose comments on papers could now be made public, although there will be an option of remaining anonymous. \u00a0Dhand added:\u00a0\u201cWe are definitely going towards an era of more transparency ...\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The THE notes that Springer is the latest publisher to allow readers to see discussions between authors and reviewers, following the Swiss-based group <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mdpi.com\/2018\/10\/12\/opening-up-peer-review\/\">MDPI<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plos.org\/plos\/2019\/05\/plos-journals-now-open-for-published-peer-review\/\">Public Library of Science<\/a> (Plos), which changed last year. The move came after dozens of journal editors signed an open <a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/letter\">letter<\/a> in February 2018 calling for peer review reports to be made public. \u00a0<em>Nature Communications<\/em>, has published peer review reports since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder how this will go down with social science journals. \u00a0The risk must be that it will further mystify an already murky process. \u00a0On balance, however, I'm in favour. \u00a0Back when it often felt that I was a full-time editor, I regularly thought that some reviews were much more valuable than the papers, and remember thinking (perhaps not aloud) that a <em>Journal of Referee Reports<\/em> might just catch on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I see that Nature\u00a0(a Springer journal) is opening up the mysteries of the peer-review process. \u00a0See this report in the THE. \u00a0About time, many say. \u00a0Hang on a bit, others respond.
