{"id":7659,"date":"2020-03-13T07:38:05","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T07:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7659"},"modified":"2020-03-13T07:38:05","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T07:38:05","slug":"so-are-we-making-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/03\/13\/so-are-we-making-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"So, are we making progress?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you wanted to take a glass half-full view of how young people are being prepared for the challenges of climate change and the ecological crisis, I think you might make these points:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">The Greta Thunberg-inspired, monthly student Friday strikes organised by Teach the Future. \u00a0These occur up and down the country and are also international<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Students are protesting about what they see as the lack of effective government action and the lack of effective education within schools. \u00a0These are both new phenomena<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Students are campaigning in relation to climate change and also the ecological crisis. \u00a0It\u2019s really important that these continue to be linked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">The campaign relates to both primary and 11-19 institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">There is wide-ranging support from organisations across the environment sector<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Teach the Future has<span class=\"\">\u00a06 reasonable asks, and is campaigning effectively<\/span>\u00a0(eg its recent parliamentary reception). \u00a0The main ask is for a government commissioned review into how the whole of the English formal education system is preparing students for the climate emergency and ecological crisis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">There is talk of a HoC Select Committee inquiry (DfE hates these)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">It seems that two large teacher unions (NEU and NAHT) are on-side<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Some schools are doing a really good job<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">The academy sector wants their schools to do more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Whilst government tends to play a straight bat at all of this, Teach the Future is helping students combat what the DfE says;
