{"id":7697,"date":"2020-04-29T06:58:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T06:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7697"},"modified":"2020-04-29T06:58:37","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T06:58:37","slug":"theres-a-world-of-a-difference-between-will-and-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/04\/29\/theres-a-world-of-a-difference-between-will-and-may\/","title":{"rendered":"There's a world of a difference between Will and May"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/comment\/the-times-view-on-william-wordsworths-activism-poetic-justice-0qpd65m3r\">leading article<\/a> this morning, <em>Poetic Justice<\/em>, mis-quotes Wordsworth by substituting \"will\" for \"may\" in his poem, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/45557\/the-tables-turned\">The Tables Turned<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Wordsworth's insight was that \u201c<em>One impulse from a vernal wood \/ May teach you more of man, \/ Of moral evil and of good, \/ Than all the sages can.\u201d \u00a0 <\/em>He did not write \u201c<em>Will teach you more of evil \u2026<\/em>\u201d because it\u2019s not true.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The key lines in this poem are the last two: \u201c<em>Come forth, and bring with you a heart \/ That watches and receives<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0If you do that, then \u201cmay\u201d stands a chance of becoming \u201cwill\u201d. \u00a0If you don\u2019t then the vernal wood\u2019s impulse will likely be dissipated.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This is something that all good environmental educators know.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Times leading article this morning, Poetic Justice, mis-quotes Wordsworth by substituting \"will\" for \"may\" in his poem, The Tables Turned.
