[<strong>*<\/strong>] \u00a0The formal is the same as our most recent publication: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/The-World-Well-Leave-Behind-Grasping-the-Sustainability-Challenge-1st\/Scott-Vare\/p\/book\/9781783537730\">The World We'll Leave Behind<\/a>: grasping the sustainability challenge,<\/em> with 43 short chapters. \u00a0These have an average length of 1350 words,\u00a0somewhat longer than before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is how the introduction begins:<\/p>\n<p>\"<span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>This book is an introduction to the long history of our learning about human-environment relationships; that is, our struggles with and within the natural world; first for survival, then for dominance, currently for self-preservation, and in future perhaps, even for long-term, mutually-beneficial co-existence.\u00a0 We set out to [i] chart these relationships through the specific lens of human learning, putting on record many of the people, ideas and events that have contributed, often unwittingly, to the modern global movement for sustainable development; [ii] locate current efforts to achieve sustainable development within the broad history of ideas; and [iii] outline some probable and some possible future directions for sustainable development<\/em>. \u00a0...\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The book starts around 10,000 BCE and ends around 2030 CE. \u00a0It's divided into three sections with a set of appendices:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Section 1 \u2013 <em>Past historic<\/em> \u2013 up to the end of the 1950s<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Section 2 \u2013 <em>Present imperfect<\/em> \u2013 from the publication of Silent Spring to today<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Section 3 \u2013 <em>Future possible<\/em> \u2013 looking ahead to 2030 and beyond<\/p>\n<p>It was a joy to write as it is a distillation of a working lifetime's thinking in the round about environmental education. \u00a0Publication will be in the late Autumn, somewhen, virus permitting.<\/p>\n<p>.................................<\/p>\n<p>May 18th Update: The title of the book has been changed since this post was first written. \u00a0It is:\u00a0<i>Learning, Environment and Sustainable Development: a history of ideas. \u00a0<\/i>Everything else remains<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finally, the text of the latest Scott \/ Vare book has been despatched to the publishers. \u00a0The title is Learning, Environment and Sustainable Development: a history of ideas.
