{"id":7706,"date":"2020-05-29T07:25:54","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T07:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7706"},"modified":"2020-05-29T07:26:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T07:26:48","slug":"orderly-pangrams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/05\/29\/orderly-pangrams\/","title":{"rendered":"Orderly pangrams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Strictly speaking, a pangram \u00a0is a sentence that uses all the letters of the alphabet. \u00a0One I remember from learning to type is:<\/p>\n<h5>\"The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog\".<\/h5>\n<p>This has the great virtue of making sense \u2013 sort of. \u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/clagnut.com\/blog\/2380\/#Without_abbreviations.2C_acronyms.2C_contractions.2C_initialisms.2C_isolated_letters.2C_proper_nouns.2C_Roman_numerals\">perfect pangram<\/a> would use each letter only once. \u00a0These are not common in English. \u00a0One such is:<\/p>\n<h5>\"Cwm fjord bank glyphs vext quiz\".<\/h5>\n<p>But this looks to me more like a string of nouns than a sentence. \u00a0An initial letter pangram is a 26 word story with the initial letters of the words in alphabetical order. \u00a0The Times Diary recently ran a lockdown competition about these, though no one really won. \u00a0A favourite entry of mine was:<\/p>\n<h5>\"Adam baked cakes. \u00a0Diet evidently forgotten. \u00a0Got hungry in Jane's kitchen. \u00a0Looking massive now, obesity problem! \u00a0Quickly realised should take up vegan wisdom. \u00a0Xmas \u2013 yummy zucchini\".<\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"\">I worked on this with my grandchildren and they all produced creditable efforts. \u00a0My best shot (after a ridiculous amount of time) was this extinction-themed effort:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"\">\"Animals beware! \u00a0Carnotaurus! \u00a0Diplodocus! \u00a0Extinction fears grow higher. \u00a0I just know lions might never outwit poachers. Questing respectfully,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">surely those urbane vets\u00a0<\/span><i class=\"\">will<\/i><span class=\"\">\u00a0x-ray your zebra.\"<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>In the end, I thought that writing reverse\u00a0initial letter pangram might be easier. \u00a0Here's my best attempt:<\/p>\n<h5>\"Zoologists! \u00a0Your x-rays were very useful to students. \u00a0Routine questions permitted, once normally meeting locally. \u00a0Kindly just inform house guests following every day contact beginning again\".<\/h5>\n<p>...................................................<\/p>\n<p>Enough, already! \u00a0I'm turning to haiku \u2013 much less trouble, although even harder to create something effective. \u00a0My first shot (virus themed) will appear next week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Strictly speaking, a pangram \u00a0is a sentence that uses all the letters of the alphabet. \u00a0One I remember from learning to type is: \"The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog\".
