{"id":7710,"date":"2020-06-04T06:23:59","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T06:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7710"},"modified":"2020-06-04T06:23:59","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T06:23:59","slug":"would-you-listen-to-shell-on-climate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/06\/04\/would-you-listen-to-shell-on-climate\/","title":{"rendered":"Would you listen to Shell on Climate?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I see that the <a href=\"http:\/\/naee.org.uk\/june-1st-2020\/\">NAEE update<\/a> recently drew attention to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/podcast\/carbon-offsetting-medieval-indulgence-or-the-way-to-net-zero-\">Spectator podcast<\/a> on the ethics and politics of carbon off-setting. \u00a0It had a contribution from Shell which clearly paid for the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p>Dear me; the Spectator and Shell! \u00a0I wonder how many simply refused to listen in because of where it was and who was contributing. \u00a0The Shell \/ Spectator combo may have been too much for many to cope with even though Tony Jupiter was on there as well, talking what I thought was informed good sense. \u00a0I found the podcast useful; it deals with important issues in what I thought was a balanced way. \u00a0Criteria enough, you'd have thought ...<\/p>\n<p>As to why I didn't refuse to listen, this was because I'm not sufficient of a hypocrite to rail against fossil fuel companies whilst still using their products \u2013 though clearly many are. \u00a0Whilst I can see that there might be a difference in principle between holding shares in a company (or a sector such as petrochemicals) and merely buying their products and services, in practice I can see little difference at all; in both cases you are supporting them financially \u2013 in one case as an investment, in the other as exchange for something you value more than your money.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I see that the NAEE update recently drew attention to a Spectator podcast on the ethics and politics of carbon off-setting. \u00a0It had a contribution from Shell which clearly paid for the whole thing.
