{"id":7771,"date":"2020-09-14T07:06:37","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T07:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7771"},"modified":"2020-09-14T07:06:37","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T07:06:37","slug":"100-companies-and-71-of-global-emissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/09\/14\/100-companies-and-71-of-global-emissions\/","title":{"rendered":"100 companies and 71% of global emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is an extract from a\u00a0<em>Teach the Future<\/em>\u00a0[TtF] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachthefuture.uk\/post\/our-education-system-isn-t-ready-for-the-climate-crisis?postId=5f1db948d59d900017538102\">blog<\/a> by Henry Webb, a 19 year old undergraduate:<\/p>\n<h5>\"<em>Another major problem with the current system is the contradicting messages taught to students. \u00a0While climate crisis education is insufficient, climate change as a problem is at least discussed in both scientific and social terms throughout primary and secondary schools. \u00a0However, we are never told to question the very human activities that are responsible for this. \u00a0Recycling and electric cars unfortunately don\u2019t count as climate education anymore. \u00a0Whatever your political position is, it\u2019s surely reasonable that every student should be taught about the 100 companies that are responsible for over 70% of global emissions, what they knew, and how they deliberately misled us<\/em>.\"<\/h5>\n<p>It was the last sentence that caught my eye. \u00a0This 70% (actually 71%) from 100 companies claim originates from\u00a0Channel 4\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/the-last-leg\/on-demand\/68901-001\">The Last Leg<\/a>\u00a0in 2018. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fullfact.org\/news\/are-100-companies-causing-71-carbon-emissions\/\">full fact.org<\/a> says that this\u00a0figure comes from a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/info\/about-us\">charity CDP<\/a> (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). \u00a0A press release said: \"100 active fossil fuel producers including ExxonMobil, Shell, BHP Billiton and Gazprom are linked to 71% of industrial greenhouse gas emissions since 1988.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Digging (terrible pun, sorry) more deeply (though \"mining the data\" would be much worse) shows that: \"...\u00a0of the total estimated cumulative greenhouse gas emissions released by human activity (excluding carbon dioxide from land use, land use change and forestry, and agricultural methane) between 1988 and 2015, 71% of those emissions originated from 100 fossil fuel producers. This includes the emissions from producing fossil fuels (like oil, coal and gas), and the subsequent use of the fossil fuels they sell to other companies.
