{"id":7805,"date":"2020-11-15T15:27:52","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T15:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7805"},"modified":"2020-11-15T15:27:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T15:27:52","slug":"esdg-greta-and-missing-young-ecologists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2020\/11\/15\/esdg-greta-and-missing-young-ecologists\/","title":{"rendered":"ESDG, Greta, and missing young ecologists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let's bless the UN for gifting us a new acronym to enjoy in these dark and desperate times. \u00a0This is ESDG. \u00a0Yes, you've guessed it: education for the sustainable development goals. \u00a0You'll find the glorious details <a href=\"https:\/\/irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com\/be6d1d56\/files\/uploaded\/accelerating-education-for-the-sdgs-in-unis-web_zZuYLaoZRHK1L77zAd4n.pdf\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Of course you're already asking yourselves \"Where does this leave ESD?\" \u00a0The UN says:<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>While ESDGs builds on the established field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), it incorporates a broader agenda of issues, objectives and methodologies than ESD, and responds directly to the greatly increasing interest across the university sector in engaging with the SDGs<\/em>\"<\/p>\n<p>I hope that's clear enough for you because it certainly isn't for me. \u00a0It's not as if ESD is clear either. \u00a0A double triumph then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, quartered safe in Wiltshire, I'm left to appreciate the news that one\u00a0of three new science laboratories at a local secondary school is to be called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk\/news\/18826037.thunberg-name-science-lab\/\">Thunberg Laboratory<\/a>. \u00a0The name resulted from a public competition asking residents to submit a name for the lab. \u00a0The person who suggested the name did so\u00a0because \u201c<em>Ecology is the study of living ecosystems. \u00a0Due to the climate crisis, virtually all ecosystems on this planet are currently under threat. \u00a0We need to inspire young people to protect the ecosytems of this planet. \u00a0Currently there is arguably no better inspiration than Greta Thunberg who has single handedly done more to bring the climate crisis to world attention than anyone<\/em>.\"<\/p>\n<p>Did you see how smoothly that shifted from ecology to climate, even though Thunberg doesn't really talk about ecology. \u00a0But then who does? \u00a0What other young personalities do this? \u00a0Is that because it's hard? \u00a0It's certainly a lot harder than going on about climate and the deficiencies of here today and gone tomorrow politicians. \u00a0Or is it because they never learnt much about it at school? \u00a0It would certainly be nice to think that all the students who are to be inspired by the lab's new name will learn some ecology in it. \u00a0But will they? \u00a0Will they even learn all that much about the climate crisis? \u00a0With names come responsibilities; I hope the school knows that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let's bless the UN for gifting us a new acronym to enjoy in these dark and desperate times. \u00a0This is ESDG. \u00a0Yes, you've guessed it: education for the sustainable development goals. \u00a0You'll find the glorious details here. \u00a0Of course you're...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7805","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7805","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7805"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7805\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7805"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7805"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7805"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
