{"id":7847,"date":"2021-04-08T07:56:13","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T07:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7847"},"modified":"2021-04-08T07:56:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T07:56:13","slug":"learning-about-the-climate-young-people-and-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/04\/08\/learning-about-the-climate-young-people-and-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning about the climate: young people and schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I noted the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/04\/05\/learning-about-the-climate-the-curriculum\/\">other day<\/a>, and also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/01\/19\/learning-about-the-climate-the-earth\/\">a few weeks ago<\/a>, I\u00a0gave a talk to a group of PGCE geography students at the start of the year. \u00a0At the end of the talk, I set out what I thought about a number of issues to do with climate, environment and the curriculum. \u00a0I did this so that the students could see my thinking and assumptions about the issues. \u00a0I stressed that they did not have to accept what I thought, but that there was an imperative on them to have their own views on these topics. \u00a0I confined myself to 5 topics which were: The Earth; Young people; Schools; Curriculum organisation; Curriculum progression. \u00a0This is what I said about the young people and the schools they are in:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young people<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 are increasingly aware that we face serious problems<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 see these as problems they will have to face<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 may not always fully understand the issues \u2013 but who does?<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 tend not to get unbiased messages about them<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 don\u2019t necessarily view populist policies and strategies as controversial<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 want to be informed and involved<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 need schools to help them think through the issues<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 will respond well to being taken seriously<\/div>\n<p><strong>Schools should ...<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 be seen to understand that sustainability is of relevance to their work<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 adopt sustainability as a core value and thus part of their purpose<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 involve all staff and students in deciding and implementing change<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 get the buy-in of parents<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 think in a rounded way in terms of the school\u2019s curriculum, campus, community and culture<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 fund curriculum, professional and organisational development<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u2013 beware of what the hidden curriculum is teaching their students<\/div>\n<p>There's so much more to say, of course, but these were enough for a couple of powerpoint slides.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I noted the other day, and also\u00a0a few weeks ago, I\u00a0gave a talk to a group of PGCE geography students at the start of the year. \u00a0At the end of the talk, I set out what I thought about...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7847","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-talks-and-presentations"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7847","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7847"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7847\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7847"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7847"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7847"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
