{"id":7851,"date":"2021-01-28T09:03:55","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T09:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7851"},"modified":"2021-01-28T09:04:08","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T09:04:08","slug":"thu-peace-justice-and-scarlett-westbrook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/01\/28\/thu-peace-justice-and-scarlett-westbrook\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace, Justice and Scarlett Westbrook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You'll have heard of 16 year old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachthefuture.uk\/post\/scarlett-westbrook-campaign-coordinator\">Scarlett Westbrook<\/a>, I guess. \u00a0If you haven't then you're really not keeping up! \u00a0She is head of political engagement at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachthefuture.uk\">Teach the Future<\/a> and a key figure in the UK Student Climate Network, <a href=\"https:\/\/ukscn.org\">UKSCN<\/a>. \u00a0She was a speaker at the January 17th launch of the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thecorbynproject.com\/events\/\">Project for Peace and Justice<\/a>. \u00a0You can catch her talk\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XRfJRuL_4K8\">here<\/a><em>. \u00a0<\/em>It starts 11 minutes 50 seconds in and lasts about 5 minutes. \u00a0I'm assuming it gives something of an insight into the thinking informing the work of <em>Teach the Future<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although you need to listen to it all if you are to get the full flavour of what was said, here's a representative extract.<\/p>\n<p><em>\"... it's those in low to middle income countries who will be impacted disproportionally [by climate change]. \u00a0A large part of this is due to the historic imprint of colonialism whereby Britain and many other Western countries stole resources, massacred populations, destroyed land and stunted these countries' economic capacities limiting their response to the climate crisis which the West predominately contributed to. ... We must pay back our historic colonial debt and recognise the interdependencies of climate change, human rights, colonialism, inequality and corporate power, self-determination and democracy. \u00a0...
