{"id":7860,"date":"2021-02-09T17:20:54","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T17:20:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7860"},"modified":"2021-02-10T09:18:55","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T09:18:55","slug":"dasgupta-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/02\/09\/dasgupta-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Dasgupta 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Dasgupta Review\u00a0was published last week and can be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gov.uk%2Fgovernment%2Fpublications%2Ffinal-report-the-economics-of-biodiversity-the-dasgupta-review&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cedswahs%40bath.ac.uk%7C091f5c38b1c849d7462608d8c756225f%7C377e3d224ea1422db0ad8fcc89406b9e%7C0%7C0%7C637478520065416170%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=J2SPcdekUjhKC7pYdnh5oueGyZ9s3SzITB2ZtA%2FWPP8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>downloaded<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0It has been widely welcomed. \u00a0The Review said that schools should \u201cintroduce Nature studies from the earliest stages of our lives and revisit them in the years we spend in secondary and tertiary education<em>\". \u00a0<\/em>It didn't say what this nature study should be. \u00a0No matter, because it won't be too long before someone from the DfE pops up to say that the national curriculum already does this. \u00a0The Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP may well already be blowing the dust off some of his earlier announcements.<\/p>\n<p>Dasgupta makes a good job of setting out a compelling case for environmental education without, as I noted above, actually saying what that should be, although he does at one point [ #21.3.4] say that every child should be taught natural history. \u00a0He also says that\u00a0students should be required to attend a course on basic ecology with field studies as part of this as this would be a way to connect students with nature. \u00a0Curiously, though, these students are in HE not schools. \u00a0It was good to see that <a href=\"https:\/\/naee.org.uk\/feb-8th-2021\/\">NAEE<\/a> pointed out that if such a course \"would be of benefit to students making up less than 50% of the cohort (which it would) \u2013 and be of benefit to all of society \u2013 it would surely be of value to all the cohort.
