{"id":7884,"date":"2021-04-18T08:33:18","date_gmt":"2021-04-18T08:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7884"},"modified":"2021-04-18T08:33:18","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T08:33:18","slug":"wild-live-is-education-failing-our-young-people-and-the-natural-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/04\/18\/wild-live-is-education-failing-our-young-people-and-the-natural-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild LIVE: Is education failing our young people and the natural world?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I listened into the latest Wild Live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oy4biQ2m3V4\">webinar<\/a> the other day, but came away disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>In case you wanted a reason not to watch it, I can reveal [<em><strong>Spoiler Alert!]<\/strong><\/em> the answer to the question posed in the title is: YES! \u00a0Education is failing our young people and the natural world. \u00a0But you knew that already, didn't you?<\/p>\n<p>This was the blurb for the event:<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>As we live through a climate and nature crisis, we ask in this Wild LIVE whether our education system is equipping future generations with the skills and knowledge they need to tackle these monumental issues. \u00a0We will consider how providing access to nature is a key part in this \u2013 and how a fully inclusive roll-out of outdoor learning could help to build resilience and development in children of all ages, whilst improving health and wellbeing. \u00a0As schools return to face-to-face learning, it\u2019s crunch time for the Government\u2019s Department of Education in progressing this agenda \u2013 and we\u2019ll be reviewing whether they are up to the task or whether their report card will be sent home with dismal results<\/em>.\"<\/p>\n<p>The trouble was that everyone agreed with each other \u2013 for hour after hour (Actually, it was only 110 minutes but just felt longer). \u00a0Maybe that was because too many of those taking part were Wildlife Trusts insiders with shared perspectives. \u00a0Perhaps it was because they liked to talk about Wildlife Trusts' initiatives a lot (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturefriendlyschools.co.uk\">Nature Friendly Schools<\/a> got a lot of mentions, for example). \u00a0Or maybe it was because everyone was just so uncritical and incurious, or that every input seemed to be either \"fantastic\" or \"brilliant\"; it was a bit like being in an \u00fcber-supportive primary classroom.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to know why it was that some schools seem to be reasonably good at this sort of teaching, whereas others aren't. \u00a0This reality means that it cannot just be about money, or that the DfE bogeyman is always to blame. \u00a0I should have asked the question had I thought I had the remotest chance of a decent answer.<\/p>\n<p>So! \u00a0Maybe Wild Live needs to mirror the natural world and employ a bit more diversity in what it offers; that is, a diversity of perspective and thought, rather than just background.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I listened into the latest Wild Live webinar the other day, but came away disappointed.
