{"id":7902,"date":"2021-05-19T09:25:40","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T09:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=7902"},"modified":"2021-05-19T09:25:40","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T09:25:40","slug":"the-people-vs-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2021\/05\/19\/the-people-vs-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"The People Vs Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've been watching <em>The People Vs Climate Change<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/p097sbzc\/the-people-vs-climate-change\">IPlayer<\/a>. \u00a0This engaging film\u00a0follows members of the UK\u2019s first ever Citizens Assembly on climate change, where 108 people \u2013 selected to represent the country \u2013 were challenged about what we should do to meet our climate change goals. \u00a0The film follows 7 of them in some detail as they learn and think about what we might, as a society, do about the most pressing issue of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these people were what you might see as \"ordinary\". \u00a0That is, as the sort of people that you and I (as ordinary people ourselves) might know or come across in the daily run of things. \u00a0What struck me was their openness and honesty about their lives and what they were being asked to do. \u00a0There's more detail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateassembly.uk\">here<\/a>, and the outcome \u2013 their report \u2013 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateassembly.uk\/recommendations\/index.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I did wonder whether schools might find this film of use, but decided not. \u00a0What school students surely need is exactly what the 108 people got: a course on climate change <em>and<\/em> what we might do. \u00a0The climate assembly members had the huge advantage of having the course delivered by the country's experts on science, behaviour change, etc, and led by expert facilitators. \u00a0School students cannot expect such a direct science expertise-led experience, although they do have smart facilitators (their teachers) on hand to aid their learning.<\/p>\n<p>So, maybe there needs to be another film where the science (etc) is explained and explored and where there are opportunities embedded for discussion. \u00a0There is, of course, no shortage of stuff out there about climate change, but I'm talking about content that is as carefully set out and structured as seemed to be what the citizens assembly was presented with.<\/p>\n<p>DfE might commission such a film, but it won't. \u00a0It thinks that it already sets out an adequate\u00a0course on climate and climate change through the national curriculum and exam courses, and has no interest in helping\u00a0students consider\u00a0what we might do about it. \u00a0Given this, who's going to do it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I've been watching The People Vs Climate Change on IPlayer. \u00a0This engaging film\u00a0follows members of the UK\u2019s first ever Citizens Assembly on climate change, where 108 people \u2013 selected to represent the country \u2013 were challenged about what we should...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7902","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7902","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7902"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7902\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7902"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7902"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7902"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
