Tomorrow, the Bill promoted by Teach the Future<\/a> and sponsored by\u00a0Nadia Whittome MP<\/a>, will receive its Second Reading in Parliament. \u00a0Whether it is moved on to the next stage in the parliamentary process depends on a vote in the House of Commons. \u00a0If you want to watch what happens, click this link<\/a>\u00a0in the morning to look out for Friday's order paper and watch the vote on BBC Parliament.<\/p>\n

I have read the Bill which sets out to amend the 2002 Education Act. \u00a0The core of the Bill is to change section 78(1) of the Act by inserting the following:<\/p>\n

\"educates pupils at the school on the climate and ecological emergency, climate justice, nature, sustainability, the need to cut carbon emissions to net zero as soon as is practicably possible, and associated scientific and technical knowledge and skills,\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\" the promotion of the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils includes educating and enabling pupils at the school to care for and protect the natural environment in a way which preserves the environment for present\u00a0and future generations<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It's an impressive piece of work and the full text of the Bill is\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n

Given that this is a private members' Bill it is unlikely to become law, but that is not the point as the Bill's existence is a solid marker for future change. \u00a0It shows DfE and others what would need to be done to make the 2002 Education Act fit for the future we face.<\/p>\n
