{"id":8103,"date":"2022-05-07T08:51:48","date_gmt":"2022-05-07T08:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8103"},"modified":"2022-05-07T08:51:48","modified_gmt":"2022-05-07T08:51:48","slug":"who-ate-all-the-canapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2022\/05\/07\/who-ate-all-the-canapes\/","title":{"rendered":"Who ate all the canap\u00e9s?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/11k-canapes-help-guests-swallow-zahawis-climate-strategy\/\">Schools Week<\/a> says that the DfE spent over \u00a311,000 on \"canap\u00e9s and booze\" to launch its new strategy on sustainability and climate change. \u00a0As I was there, I need to put the record straight.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports that Taste Studios, trading as \u201cThe Recipe\u201d, was given a \u00a311,480 contract to provide the food (and presumably \"booze\") \u2013 about \u00a346 a head given the 250 or so people there. \u00a0Schools Week says that the canap\u00e9s\u00a0listed on The recipe's website \"include seared duck breast served on sweet potato polenta cake, decorated with comfit cherries (pictured above). Or rolled wing of skate with summer truffle stuffing and crispy celeriac sticks.\"<\/p>\n<p>I didn't see any of those as almost all of what I saw was vegetarian \/ vegan (such is the reputation of we eco-folk). \u00a0It seems that DfE staff were asked not to eat or drink [at] the event as they were there for work and not as invitees. \u00a0This was because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/civil-service-code\/the-civil-service-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Civil Service Code <\/a>says officials must carry out their \u201cfiduciary obligations responsibly\u201d, making sure public money is used \u201cproperly and efficiently\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Just so. \u00a0I did my bit to help by having an alcohol-free evening, although I do confess to having quite a few of the nibbles in lieu of dinner.<\/p>\n<p>I liked the article headline:\u00a0<strong>11k canapes help guests swallow Zahawi\u2019s climate strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An article in Schools Week says that the DfE spent over \u00a311,000 on \"canap\u00e9s and booze\" to launch its new strategy on sustainability and climate change. \u00a0As I was there, I need to put the record straight.
