{"id":8111,"date":"2022-05-18T08:39:54","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T08:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8111"},"modified":"2022-05-18T15:09:25","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T15:09:25","slug":"sdg-4-7-and-our-shared-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2022\/05\/18\/sdg-4-7-and-our-shared-world\/","title":{"rendered":"SDG 4.7 and Our Shared World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">A report by Doug Bourn (UCL) and Jenny Hatley (Bath Spa) on behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/oursharedworld.net\">Our Shared World<\/a>\u00a0coalition of organisations, was launched the other day.\u00a0 The report gathered evidence of the extent to which the themes of Sustainable Development Goal Target 4.7 are being engaged with within schools in England, examining how they are being delivered, areas of success, identifiable gaps, and what the priorities for policymakers should be in the future.\u00a0 The report can be downloaded <a href=\"https:\/\/discovery.ucl.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/10147491\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and there's an edited video of the event <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mJzGxCM00hE\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The launch event said that the report aims, \"whilst summarising evidence within sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, peace, cultural diversity, and global citizenship education, to demonstrate their interconnectedness and common purpose as to how education can contribute to securing a more just and sustainable world.\"<\/p>\n<p>I had to leave mid-event so missed any conclusions; however, the introduction to the report at the launch made a number of key recommendations:<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>All schools should be made aware of the SDGs, particularly Target 4.7<br \/>\nand be encouraged to reflect them in their teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Department for Education creates a process to measure the progress<br \/>\nthat all schools are making on including the SDGs and Target 4.7 which<br \/>\ncan then be used as part of the UK government's reporting on<br \/>\nprogress towards the Goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Bodies responsible for both the initial training and continuing<br \/>\nprofessional development of teachers should be given resources and<br \/>\nsupport to enable all teachers to have the knowledge, skills and<br \/>\nconfidence to include the themes of Target 4.7 within the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>All schools should be encouraged to consider how they are including a<br \/>\nsocial purpose in their visions and mission statements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .<\/p>\n<p>I'm struck by the first recommendation as I think there is a preposition missing. \u00a0I've inserted this in bold:<\/p>\n<p>\"All schools should be made aware of the SDGs, particularly Target 4.7\u00a0and be encouraged to reflect <strong>on<\/strong>\u00a0them in their teaching and learning\"<\/p>\n<p>I 've added the work \"on\" as otherwise the report seems to tell telling schools and teachers to present the goals as something to be accepted uncritically \u2013 to pass on to students as gospel, perhaps \u2013 rather than thinking about (reflecting <em>on<\/em>)\u00a0them.<\/p>\n<p>This is not only unhelpful to students, given the goals' contested nature, but surely is also anti-educational.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A report by Doug Bourn (UCL) and Jenny Hatley (Bath Spa) on behalf of the Our Shared World\u00a0coalition of organisations, was launched the other day.\u00a0 The report gathered evidence of the extent to which the themes of Sustainable Development Goal...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,3,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8111","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-new-publications","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8111","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8111"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8111\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8111"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8111"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8111"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
