{"id":8135,"date":"2022-07-22T07:24:10","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T07:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8135"},"modified":"2022-07-22T07:24:10","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T07:24:10","slug":"addressing-the-un-from-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2022\/07\/22\/addressing-the-un-from-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Addressing the UN from Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I noticed in this week's <a href=\"https:\/\/naee.org.uk\/18th-july-2022\/\">NAEE weekly update<\/a> that Manchester University\u2019s School of Arts, Languages and Cultures had organised a competition for UK school students to write a speech or letter, addressed to the UN, on the climate emergency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was good to see this; what young people wrote has been published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alc.manchester.ac.uk\/connect\/schools\/outreach\/as-competition\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and I recommend a read of what has emerged.<\/p>\n<p>The university said that there were \"hundreds\" of entries. \u00a0How curious, then, that of the 14 youngsters mentioned in dispatches, 10 came from only 4 schools \u2013 with 6 from 2 schools. \u00a0I put this down to enthusiastic teachers. \u00a0But what does this say about all the other schools out there?<\/p>\n<p>9 of the 14 came from year 9 &amp; 10 students, with ~65% coming from girls (as far as I could tell).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I noticed in this week's NAEE weekly update that Manchester University\u2019s School of Arts, Languages and Cultures had organised a competition for UK school students to write a speech or letter, addressed to the UN, on the climate emergency.
